BANGALORE: The City Traffic Police statistics this year shows a seven per cent increase in the number of drunken drivers as compared to 2007.
This year 29,608 cases have been registered till December 13. In this month alone the Bangalore Traffic West and Traffic East recorded about 957 cases reported against drunken drivers. 27,644 such cases were registered last year.
K. Srinivasa, Deputy Superintendent of Police (Traffic East) said that the department in different corners of the city has installed 100 Alco meters, a breath alcohol tester, to check the drunken drivers. "We can give warning to people but we can’t stop them from drinking," he added. Read more

Bangalore safer for pedestrians
BANGALORE: The city traffic police recorded a marginal reduction of pedestrian deaths in 2008 as compared to 2007.
Sajad Khan, Traffic Inspector East said that recent statistics shows that pedestrian death rates have reduced.
"This year there has been a reduction of 63 pedestrian's deaths and 51 injured in context to the year 2007," he said.
Pedestrians are however, unhappy with the attitude of traffic planners.
Usha R, a computer operator and a daily walker on the city footpaths feel that the traffic people should maintain the signals properly.
"Vehicles don't drive properly," said Sanjoda Sotra, Bishop College student.Read more

Caution! Highway to disaster ahead

Beware of the 11-kilometre stretch of the NH-4 just outside the city, from Nelamangala to Chikbidarkalu. There have been 133 accidents along this stretch of the highway in just three months since September this year, according to the data with the Nelamangala Police. In November alone,there have been 30 accidents which claimed five lives. That followed 39 accidents with 10 deaths in October, and 64 accidents with five deaths in September.
Several construction projects are under way along the stretch, including four dangerous U-turns between the Jindal Aluminum Factory in Chikbidarkalu and Nelamangala
